The workshops create positive family interactions to facilitate a child’s reading experience in which they can engage with their caregivers in a variety of meaningful, yet simple, experiences centered around books. Family literacy programs also recognize the reciprocal nature of parent-child relationships. Therefore, our family literacy programs not only strive to help parents learn how to support their children’s learning, but also to facilitate opportunities for parents to develop their own skills. The program incorporates lessons in reading, writing and speaking English, nutrition, healthy living, digital literacy, and workplace skills. In any case, of course family literacy is important, more than that, it is critical.

So, how can you support Family Literacy Day?

Kenan has continued to support NCFL’s place-based family literacy programs since our inception. 2013: NCFL releases Toyota Family Literacy Program Research Project, a Meta Analysis of the Studies of High Performing Family Literacy Programs detailing outcomes from seven cities that have implemented family literacy with fidelity since 2003. The Kenan Family Literacy Model in part laid the groundwork for 30 years of subsequent family literacy and family learning programming developed by NCFL. Family Literacy programs address the literacy strengths and needs of the family/community while promoting adults' involvement in children's education, recognizing adults as a powerful influence on children's academic success. Family Literacy includes four distinct components: adult literacy, early childhood education, parenting skills and intergenerational literacy activities.
